Birthday Weekend

BIRTHDAYS FOR EVERYONE!

Last weekend was our little’s first birthday party! I have been excitedly waiting for this day since BEFORE he was born.

Colorful Birthday

I found this super cute party planner and began to dream up his birthday last year. Then, Covid happened.

After going back and forth for m o n t h s about whether or not to go forward with his birthday celebration, we finally decided to go ahead and do it.

That’s when we realized how incredibly difficult it would be to actually plan in the middle of this pandemic. If this is what we kept encountering, then I cannot even imagine what it’s like for brides to be planning their wedding day right now! (I’m rooting for you guys!)

Birthday Piñata Cake

The first “out there idea” that came to mind was a piñata cake.

Have you heard of one of those? It’s basically a chocolate mold in the shape of a cake! You get a small mallet and instead of cutting into your cake you get to smash it to reveal all of the awesome goodies!

I knew that our little would love that because when he picks up his toys he almost immediately begins to attack the floor with it… seriously. It brings him so much joy to hear the different sounds that each toy makes, which makes us think that he might be a drummer. :)

WELL, it turns out that piñata cakes are popular in Canada and in the UK but not here in Houston Tx! When I couldn’t find someone that made them, I decided to make it myself. I mean, after watching the YouTube tutorials, I figured that it wouldn’t be that hard. HA!

The second silly idea was to have a solid red #1 piñata.

And you may be wondering why is that silly?

It’s not, but it is when you decide to go forward with the party, two weeks before the date and EVERY. SINGLE. piñata business that you call only has pink, baby blue, or a Mickey Mouse #1 piñata.

I literally just laughed at one store because when I asked the lady for a red piñata she said “yes!” yet when she brought it out to me it was half red and half BLUE. (Which i’m still confused about?! Did the piñata maker run out of blue tissue half way through or what? lol)

SO, I was running around Houston searching for the perfect #1 red piñata and trying to make sure my mask wouldn’t fall off.

Primary Color Party

THE THIRD MOST IMPORTANT bit

“Lets have it at the park!” said a hopeful Cindy as she quickly reframed all logical thoughts that were yelling out RED FLAGS!

RED FLAGS:

  • August. in the park. iN TeXaS.

  • Food. in the park. In tExAs.

  • Baby. In ThE PaRk. in Texas.

  • NOT IN THE PARK. IN AUGUST. BECAUSE TEXAS.

You get the idea.

Yet, even though my brain was continuously reminding me that it would be a terrible idea, I happily distracted myself and said it would be just fine. Until just T W O days before the event when my lovely family members very gently reminded me that we would all melt. :)

That’s when we decided to change the location—48hrs before the party. That was also the same day I was having MY birthday dinner AND the same day I decided to also make little cake pops for everyone because i’m an enneagram 7w8 and that’s how we roll. L.O.L.

The day before the party, we were making red velvet cake pops and dipping them in white chocolate while laughing hysterically because they started to fall off of the popsicle stick.

Simultaneously, we were receiving text messages from friends and family asking for the updated address.

All of these things have taught me the difficulty in having something during a global pandemic, where plans are constantly changing, AND did I mention my mask was falling off the entire time!?!

I hope this little memory enables you to know that although the world has a lot of unexpected events, that we can still look back and laugh at the candid chaos that was once there.

And most importantly, I hope it reminds you of the significance of celebrating things.

I know we will for sure be looking back on all of the memories we created through all of this because of the little guy who continues to bring color into our monochromatic life.
